Bessie F. Poe

Bessie Martin Follmer Poe, 93, died peacefully at home on the farm in Lewisburg while surrounded by her family, September 14, 2013. Mrs. Poe was born at Mill Creek, Mason County, Kentucky, November 24, 1919, the only child of Joseph M. and Margaret Bierlin Follmer. She was the widow of A. Forrest Poe, Maysville insurance man, business owner and farmer. Mrs. Poe is survived by one son, Scott (Anne) Poe of Maysville and by her four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; Allison Poe Costello of Austin, TX, Andrew (Caroline) Poe of Amman, Jordan, Ike (Dani) Poe and children Ben and Ella Mae of Mt. Vernon, OH, and Jess Poe of Cincinnati. In addition to her immediate family, Mrs. Poe had many friends in the Lewisburg-Mill Creek area including her cousin, Maelynne (Gary) Anderson of Mayslick.

Bessie Martin, as she was known to her friends, was a life-long member of Mill Creek Christian (Disciples of Christ) Church and a devoted musician there, where she steadfastly played the piano and organ every Sunday for nearly 70 years. She was an avid sports fan, from the 50s and 60s following of the Maysville Bulldogs to the Cincinnati Redlegs and University of Kentucky Wildcats. Along with her late husband, her special interest was her role as spectator and supporter of her four grandchildren during their sports careers at Maysville St. Patrick and later, all four’s college sports.

Services for Bessie Martin Poe will include visitation at Knox and Brothers Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Tuesday, September 17 with her funeral at Mill Creek Christian Church 2:00 pm Wednesday, September 18. The Rev. Norman Wasson will officiate. Burial will follow in the Wedonia Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Frank and Larry Burns, David and Christian Kalb, Travis Lowe and Matthew Rankin. The family asks that memorials be made to Mill Creek Christian Church 6861 Ky 11, May’s Lick, KY 41055, St. Patrick Church or School, 318 Limestone St., Maysville, KY 41056, and Hospice of Hope, 909 Kenton Station Rod, Maysville, KY 41056.
