
Sarah Elizabeth “Missy” Loyd Clarke, 96, died peacefully Thursday at Maysville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where she had been a resident since 2005. Mrs. Clarke, born in Lexington, Kentucky on September 16, 1916 was reared in Mason County on Tuckahoe Road at “Woodlawn”, the family farm, a Patrick Henry land grant to her Bacon ancestors. She was also descended from Elijah Berry who was on the second flatboat trip down the Ohio River with Simon Kenton. She was the daughter of the late Tyree L. Loyd and Elizabeth McFarland Loyd. She was married to John H. Clarke, Jr., on January 1, 1943. They had four sons James Loyd Clarke (Mary V), John Kirk Clarke (Christy), Thomas Rees Clarke (Barb) and Robert Andrew Clarke (Cheryl), all of Maysville. There are 10 grandchildren including James Kelly (Cara), John Charles (Julie), Michael McFarland (Krissie) Clarke, all of Maysville, Catherine Elizabeth Clarke Nardolillo (John) of Lexington; Caroline Kirk Clarke Ullery (Chris) of Maysville, John Wesley Clarke of Nashville, Tenn.; Sally Fox Clarke Neff (Mathew) of Ladera Ranch, Calif., Thomas Schlifke Clarke (Nicole) of Charleston, South Carolina; Kelsey Ann Clarke Niedert (Chad) of Crestwood, Ky., and Andrew Payne Clarke of Maysville. There are fifteen great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Missy, as a young child, lived with her parents and older brother Edwin Lydell Loyd in Mississippi and Indiana. Edwin died in 1947. Her two sisters who survive are Martha Jane Loyd VanInwegen of Lexington and Margaret Ann Loyd Breslin of Maysville. Missy graduated from Maysville High School and attended the University of Kentucky where she was a proud member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Maysville. Her husband, John H. Clarke, Jr. died March 9, 2003. Funeral services will be at Trinity United Methodist Church Monday December 10 at 1 P.M. with Rev. Eric Patterson officiating. Visitation will be at the church two hours prior to the service. Burial will follow at the Maysville Cemetery in the family plot. In charge of arrangements are Knox and Brothers Funeral Home.
