He was born January 5, 1939, in Wallingford, KY to the late Claude and Ethel Hester.
Lowell was raised on the family farm in Wallingford and graduated from Fleming County High School in 1957. He enlisted in the US Army, achieved the rank of staff sergeant, and was later honorably discharged.
He married Phyllis Elliott on June 23, 1963 and shortly afterwards found employment with United Parcel Service (UPS) in Maysville. His first job with UPS was as a package delivery driver serving many small towns in the area. It was not uncommon for him to drive over an hour to deliver a single package. Later, he became a feeder driver for UPS, taking packages overnight to Columbus, OH and also Louisville, KY. He retired from UPS after 35 years of service. He won several awards for his Safe Driving Record and for many years held the record in the state of Kentucky amongst all UPS drivers for most consecutive days without an accident.
Lowell was an active and devoted member of the Maysville Church of Christ. In fifty years of attendance, he served the church in numerous capacities including Sunday school superintendent, treasurer, song leader, deacon and elder and provided communion to the sick and shut-in.
He was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel in 1996. For many years he was an avid and competitive golfer. He loved sports, particularly Kentucky football and basketball. He especially enjoyed wood-working, taking long walks around the lake and just being outside. It was a rare moment to find him sitting still unless he was reading the Bible. He had memorized many chapters and would read it through its entirety two or three times a year.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Phyllis Elliott Hester; two sons, Mark Owen (Mary Beth) and Jeryl Tyrone, both of Lexington, KY; one granddaughter, Carrie Elizabeth Hester of Lexington, KY; two older brothers, Kenneth Hester of Flemingsburg, KY; Eugene (Frances) Hester of Lawrenceburg, IN; one older sister, Maxine Donley of Greensburg, IN; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services for Mr. Hester will be Thursday, July 3 at 11 AM at Knox and Brothers Funeral Home.
Brother Arnold Howell will be officiating. Burial will follow in Green Acres Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Hospice of Hope Center in Maysville or the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org).
Visitation will be Wednesday July 2 from 6 until 8 at the funeral home.
