
Mary Powell Geiger Newell, 86, of Maysville, KY died Saturday, April 19, 2014 at the Maysville Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility. She was the widow of Joe P. Newell who died on April 5, 1989. Mrs. Newell was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Trinity United Methodist Women and the Trinity Sunshine Circle. She was the first woman to serve as the Chairman of the Administrative Board of Trinity United Methodist Church. Mrs. Newell was an avid reader, an avid Cincinnati Reds fan, a crossword puzzle enthusiast, a UK Alumni, a member of Nomads Book Club, the DAR, and Chi Omega Sorority. Mrs. Newell graduated from Lewis County High School and attended the Southern Seminary in Virginia and graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in journalism. She was born in Ashland, Kentucky on December 1, 1927 the daughter of the late William Lewis Geiger, Jr. and Mary Cathryn Pollitt Plummer (Stepfather, George M. Plummer). She is survived by her two sons, Charles Martin Newell (Nina) of Lexington, KY and Edwin P. Newell (Melissa) of Whitesburg, KY; two daughters, Catherine N. Miller and Mary Frances Denham (John) both of Maysville, KY; grandchildren, Joseph Kenner Newell, Lena C. McDonough (John), Zachary Chase Newell (April), Abigail Archer Newell, Margaret Ann Newell, Jay Denham (Morri), Rees Denham (Amanda) and Sterling Denham; great grandchildren, Chase Alan Newell, Ava Kate Newell, Mollie Catherine McDonough, Dillon Denham and Boone Denham. Funeral services for Mary Powell Newell will be held at the Trinity United Methodist Church at 12:00 PM, Tuesday, April 22, 2014 with Rev. Eric Patterson officiating. Burial will follow in the Maysville Cemetery. The grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday from 10:00 AM until the hour of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Trinity UMC, 26 West Third Street, Maysville, KY 41056 or to the Maysville Players, 116 West Second Street, Maysville, KY 41056. The arrangements are under the direction of the Knox and Brothers Funeral Home.
