Bernie proudly served his country in the United States Army as a Vietnam veteran with the First Signal Brigade. His patriotism and dedication to his country were an important part of who he was, and his service will always be remembered with gratitude and respect.
Above all, Bernie was a family man. He shared 30 years of marriage with Dolores Fette, who preceded him in death. Together, they built a family that grew to include eight children (Paula Jones, Lora Housworth, Brandi Pickerill, David Byrd, Mike Byrd, Tammi Dowd, Randy Byrd and Jerry Byrd) and 54 grandchildren.
Bernie had a personality that was truly one of a kind. He was quick-witted, loved cracking jokes, and always had a way of bringing laughter into a room. He enjoyed baseball, computer games, word searches, and country music. He also had a special love for eagles, a symbol that seemed fitting for a man who was so proud of his country. And anyone who knew Bernie knew how much he adored his beloved dog, Babette.
Bernie found joy in the simple things. His humor, stories, strong spirit, and unmistakable personality will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Though his time with us has come to an end, the memories he created and the love he gave will live on through the generations of family he leaves behind.
Rest easy, Bernie. You will forever be loved, remembered, and missed.
