I MET SHEREE ABOUT 1987 AFTER ATTENDING THEALBANYAREA READING ASSOCIATION BREAKFAST. I WAS INVITED BY BETTY DUNSON AND STELLA PETE IN ALBANY, GA. LATER, I WAS INVITED TO THE GEORGIA READING ASSOCIATION MEETING IN MACON. I MET SHEREE AND ADMIRED HER BEAUTY, LEADERSHIP, FRIENDLINESS, AND COMMITTMENT TO PROMOTING AND IMPROVING READING/LITERACY AS AN EDUCATOR AND VOLUNTEER. SHE BECAME A CLOSE FRIEND AS I BECAME MORE INVOLVED. SHE WAS ALWAYS KIND AND HANDLED ANY SITUATION WITH GRACE.
MY FAVORITE MEMORY WAS FLYING WITH 3 GRA OFFICERS AS THE GRA MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR TO THE IRA CONVENTION IN TORONTO, CANADA. WE ARRIVED EARLY TO GO TO NIAGRA FALLS AND TOUR THE AREA. WE WERE LIKE CLASSMATES ON A NEW ADVENTURE. WE SAW MANY FRUIT TREES LIKECHERRY, APPLE, AND PLUM. I FINALLY PERSUADED THE DRIVER, SHERYL DASINGER TO STOP AND TASTE THE CHERRIES AT THE FRUIT STAND. THEY NEVER HAD TASTED CHERRIES BEFORE. THEY WERE AMAZED AT THE TASTE, WHICH IS MY FAVORITE FRUIT. THESE CHERRIES WERE 2 TIMES BIGGER THAN IN AMERICA. THEY ATE AND BOUGHT MORE THAN I DID.
THAT DAY WAS 100 + DEGREES , THE HOTTEST EVER RECORDED IN MARCH. WE WERE READY TO GET WET AT THE MAID OF THE MIST. THE PARKING AT THE PARK WAS FULL, AND WE HAD ONE WITH A BROKEN FOOT ON CRUTCHES, DEBBIE BUCKHOLTS. WE WENT BACK UP TO THE NEW CASINO TO EAT. THE SIGNS ALONG THE ROAD SAID FREE SHUTTLE TO THE FALLS. I ASKED MANY HOW WOULD WE GET THE FREE RIDE TO GO. FINALLY AFTER SPEAKING TO 8 WAITERS, THE FINAL ONE SAID YOU MEAN "PEOPLE MOVERS" , GO TO TICKET OFFICE AT THE FALLS, THEN YOU CAN RIDE THE PEOPLE MOVER BUS OR THE RIDE LIKE SIX FLAGS UP AND DOWN THE STEEP HILL BACK TO THE FREE PARKING IN THE CASINO. THE DRIVER TOOK US TO GET TICKETS, SO ON THE TICKET WAS "PEOPLE MOVER" THAT WE HAD TO PAY FOR. WE LAUGHED UNTIL WE CRIED. SHEREE WAS A TRUE PEOPLE MOVER IN HER FAMILY, WORK, AND VOLUNTEER EFFORTS ESPECIALLY GRA/ILA. I WILL MISS HER GREATLY AS A MENTOR AND CLOSE FRIEND.
