Diane Long

Diane Bourn Long, beloved Mother, Granny, Great-Grandmother, and Friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family the morning of August 4th, 2026. She was born on June 23, 1948, in Atlanta, Georgia, to the late William (Bill) and Willene Bourn. Diane was also the proud big sister to her brother Billy Bourn, who also preceded her in death.

Diane graduated from Avondale High School and married the love of her life, Sherwood Long, on June 17th, 1966. Together, they built a life centered on faith, family, laughter, and countless memories before Sherwood’s passing.

Diane is survived by her loving children: Scott Long (Suzanne), Amanda Long, and Travis Long (Karen). She was the proud and devoted “Granny” to Lauren Long, Blake Long (Chelsea), Devin Skelton, Tyler Skelton (Jacie), Bryson Long, Bayleigh Long, and Brystol Long. Her great-grandchildren, Collin Long, Alayna, and Liam also brought endless smiles to her heart.

Diane began her career as a receptionist in a dental office, but her true calling came as the longtime Principal’s Secretary at Riverdale High School. She was much more than a secretary – she became a trusted friend, caring mentor, and familiar face to generations of students, teachers, administrators, and families. Her kindness, work ethic, and welcoming smile left a lasting impression on everyone who walked through the school’s doors.

A faithful member of First Baptist Church of McDonough, Diane cherished attending church with her parents through the years. Her faith was a guiding force in her life and was reflected in the way she loved and cared for others.

More than anything, Diane loved her family. She rarely missed a game, recital, ceremony, or milestone involving her grandchildren. Whether it was baseball, football, softball, or any other event, “Granny” was always there – and you knew she was there. She was the loudest voice in the stands, proudly leading parents and grandparents in every cheer. Her unwavering support and enthusiasm became a treasured part of every game and every memory.

She and Sherwood shared a love for traveling to those sporting events, often turning a simple trip to the ballfield into an unforgettable adventure. Those road trips became cherished family traditions filled with laughter, stories, and memories that will be treasured forever.

Diane was also known for her larger-than-life personality and unique passions. She was, without question, one of the biggest Elvis Presley fans anyone could ever meet. His music was the soundtrack to many happy moments in her life, and anyone who knew Diane knew just how much she adored the King of Rock and Roll. But if you ever referred to Elvis as “The King” around Diane, she would be quick to lovingly remind you that there is only one true King – Jesus Christ. She was also a devoted Georgia Tech fan and delighted in cheering for whoever happened to be playing Georgia – a tradition she especially enjoyed because it gave her the chance to lovingly tease Sherwood, her two sons, and many of her grandchildren.

Diane’s legacy is one of unconditional love, unwavering support, infectious laughter, and joyful enthusiasm. She taught her family the importance of showing up, cheering loudly for those you love, and finding adventure in everyday moments. While her voice may no longer echo from the bleachers, the love, encouragement, and memories she gave so freely will continue to inspire all who were blessed to know her.

Granny’s seat may now be empty, but her spirit will forever be in the stands, cheering on the people she loved the most.

Visitation will be at Haisten Funerals & Cremations, 1745 Zack Hinton Parkway, McDonough, GA 30253, US, on August 6, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

Diane's Celebration of Life will take place in the Haisten Chapel on August 7, 2026 at 11:00 am. A Committal Service will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Park, 640 McGarity Rd, McDonough, GA 30252, US.
