Doug was born in Hampton, GA to the late Guy Lumpkin and Amanda Mote Echols. His greatest love was June, his sweetheart since 4th grade and his bride of 71 years. He loved his children and grandchildren. Upon graduation from Hampton High School Doug joined the Air Force. While in the Air Force he and June had the wonderful experience of living in Alaska for 2 years. He was honorably discharged October 1957 after serving 4 years and earning the rank of Staff Sergeant. Doug worked as a machinist at Southern States for 7 years. Doug also operated his own Echols Radio & TV Repair Shop for many years. He worked 28 ½ years in Machine Shop 300 at Delta Airlines, retiring in October 1992. But he certainly did not retire from working as he continued to spend countless hours until 2020 preparing and raising gardens, stocking his roadside vegetable stand, maintaining a house and 30 acres, and helping raise and care for many pets, horses, cows, goats and grandkids.
He was a member of Jonesboro First Christian Church and former member of Berea Christian Church. He was an avid animal lover; gardener; wood worker; builder of furniture, houses, playhouses, fences and barns; and had whatever skills were necessary to keep things operating. He had a special knack for raising exotic plants that were not supposed to thrive in Hampton. He loved watching birds and hummingbirds. And he enjoyed every minute he could spend on his tractor!!
Doug is predeceased by children Gregory and Anthony and 10 siblings.
Survivors include his bride June Echols, daughter Connie Estes (Garey), grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and 3 brothers.
Visitation will be at Haisten Funeral Home Thursday, July 2, from 10:00 to 11:00 followed by funeral service at 11:00 in the chapel. Pastor Peter Laughren will officiate.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the entire staff of Bee Hive Homes in Stockbridge and to Adoration Hospice for their exceptional and loving care and support for Doug and June.
