Born on June 4, 1947, in McDonough, Georgia, Elaine was the beloved daughter of the late Thomas and Lucille Whitaker. As a young girl, she moved with her family to Atlanta, where she grew up, before eventually returning to McDonough later in life—a place she always considered home.
Elaine graduated from Walter F. George High School, where her creativity, determination, and strong work ethic first began to shine. Those qualities would remain with her throughout her life.
A gifted entrepreneur and artist, Elaine owned The Peach Basket, a beloved gift shop located on the McDonough Square. She poured her heart into every detail of her business, delighting customers with her creativity and warm personality. She truly never met a stranger. Her welcoming spirit and genuine kindness drew people to her, and many who entered her shop left as friends.
Above all else, Elaine was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Her family was the center of her world, and loving them was her greatest joy. She possessed a remarkable gift for making others feel valued, supported, and deeply loved. Her kindness, generosity, and unwavering strength left an immeasurable impact on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Elaine found beauty in life's simple pleasures. She loved oil painting, especially nostalgic scenes of old cabins, quiet country roads, and peaceful landscapes that reflected a simpler time. Her artwork reflected not only her talent but also her appreciation for the beauty and tranquility found in everyday life.
Music and dancing were among Elaine's greatest passions. Along with her sisters, she became affectionately known as "The Whitaker Sisters," famous for being able to "cut a rug" wherever music was playing. She loved every style of music and never limited herself to one genre. Even just weeks before her passing, she could still be found dancing from her bed along side her daughter and nurses bringing smiles to those around her.
Elaine also had a love for travel—especially spontaneous road trips with no particular destination. Some of her favorite adventures came from taking the scenic route, getting lost, discovering hidden places, and making treasured memories along the way.
Creativity was woven into every part of Elaine's life. Whether through her paintings, her business, decorating, or simply making those around her feel special, she had a unique ability to bring beauty and joy into the lives of others.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Lucille Whitaker; her sister, Rita Zorda; her brother-in-law, Rocky Zorda; her sister-in-law, Debbie Whitaker; and her nephew, Cody Whitaker.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her loving husband, Jim Gantt; her devoted daughter, Mandy Gantt White; her son-in-law, Laney White; her beloved grandchildren, Austin White and Meagan White; her brother, Tommy Whitaker; her sister, Teresa Whitaker; her nieces, Tonya Stanfield, Shannon Rapes, Katie Dowdell, and Lindsey Rapes; her nephew, Sam Whitaker; along with many extended family members and dear friends who will forever remember her warmth, compassion, creativity, and joyful spirit.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Elaine's memory to a local animal sanctuary or zoo, or to the Alzheimer's Association, causes that reflected her love for animals and compassion for others.
Elaine's legacy is one of love, creativity, perseverance, generosity, and grace. Though our hearts are broken by her absence, we find comfort in knowing that her beautiful spirit lives on in the lives she touched, the memories she created, and the love she gave so freely.
She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
Visitation will be held at Haisten Funerals & Cremations, 1745 Zack Hinton Parkway, McDonough, GA 30253, on July 12, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm, followed by a Celebration of Life in the Haisten Chapel at 3:00 pm.
