

Sid was predeceased by his parents , John Henry Mergens of Minnesota and Ethel Louise Glover of South Carolina, his brother Robert Lewis Mergens ,and his sisters Jacqueline Land, Margaret Wex, and Helen Sweeney.
Sid was born and raised in Atlanta , attending J.B. Gordon Grammar School, Murphy Junior High, and Southwest Dekalb High School. He attended Georgia Military Academy joining the Army National Guard from which he was honorably discharged in 1955. His career revolved around his skill in Welding and Fabricating. He worked in customer relations, sales and consulting within that trade, sharing his talent in the craft as an instructor at Atlanta Area Tech for many years. He was featured by the Atlanta Journal in a 1959 article recognizing those who helped build Atlanta to its first million citizens.
He met and married Loretta Sue Hall and they would have two children, Susan Delores Mergens and Sandra Jill Mergens. Sid’s priorities were the joyous times he spent with his wife and children. He mentioned often that his fondest memories were of playing with his children after a long workday. After 58 years of marriage, his wife, Sue, passed away in 2011. Sid enjoyed target shooting, bicycle riding, roller skating, and loved to fish. He provided a loving home on Cascade Road for his family and eventually moved to Sun City Community in Griffin, where he enjoyed playing billiards with his friends and socializing with his neighbors. He was an active church member throughout his life and always enjoyed singing in the choir. Sid was known to love sunsets and the occasional beach vacation where he would watch the waves break over the sand. Later on in life, Sid shared time with Jeanne Collier who he mentioned was a very fine lady. Sid was easily liked by all he knew and loved deeply by his family. He will be remembered as having sparkling blue eyes, an easy going manner and an infectious smile.
He is survived by his daughters Susan Masters and Sandra Edmondson, their husbands Scott Masters and Scott Keesey, granddaughters Shelby Masters, Peyton Masters, Taylor Masters, Kristen Edmondson, grandson Brett Edmondson and his wife Elianna, step granddaughter Courtney Schneider, her husband Austin, great grandsons Dru and Rawson, step grandchildren Camden and Emilia Keesey, great granddaughter Willow Grace Lee, and her father Glen Lee.
Services will be held Saturday, June 28, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. Visitation will be held one hour prior at 12:00 p.m. at McDonough First United Methodist Church 151 Macon St. McDonough, Georgia 30253. Internment at Westview Cemetery to follow.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation.
