Mary Elizabeth West

Mary Elizabeth West, daughter of James and Bessie Oakley, was born on April 14, 1930 in Nash County, North Carolina. Mary was called home on September 23, 2016. Mary was often called “Maybet”, “Ma”, or “Mary Elizabeth” by those who knew and loved her. Her legacy of love included helping many of the younger women in the family. Her home was often a refuge for family, friends and strangers. Mary had a great love and affection for children and her family. She was an outstanding cook, seamstress, and re-upholsterer. She had a great sense of humor and a passion for helping others. She retired from Federal service, as a Nursing Assistant, after over 20 years of service. Mary married Garmon West, Sr. of Nash County, North Carolina at young age and this union produced two children. One surviving child is Rev. Dr. Garmon West, Jr. Mary was predeceased by her son James Earl West; sisters Callie, Beatrice and Rosa; and brothers Julius, James and David. Surviving siblings are George Oakley and Ohnie Oakley. Mary’s grandchildren are Darryl West (deceased), Dion West, Nicole West, Tiffany S. West-Pinkney, and Dr. Sylvia E. West, DVM. Her great grandchildren are Jayd L. Pinkney, Tayte S. Pinkney, Brittany West, Darrion West, Breyona West, Robert Colbert, Janae West, Damien West, Coree Moreno, and Carlos Moreno. Mary is also survived by two daughters-in-law, Saundra West and T. Rose West. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends. The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 1, 2016 from 12 noon to 2:00 PM. Celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Haisten Funeral Home with Evangelist Hida M Sayles and Rev. Dr. Garmon West, Jr. officiating.
