Sidney Stewart Haskins, age 78, of McDonough, Georgia passed away on Thursday, September 13, 2018. Sidney was born January 23, 1940, in Pearson, Georgia to the late Maxine Sears and Sidney Monroe Haskins and later graduated from Douglas High School in 1958. A 1964 graduate of the Pharmacy School at the University of Georgia, Sidney served patients in Georgia and Florida as a pharmacist for over 45 years. Before Starbucks, local drugstores were gathering places in small towns where people received free coffee, news of the day, and free medical advice. Known to his customers simply as “Doc”, Sidney owned one of those drugstores for many years, dispensing medicine and advice with a friendly smile. Sidney’s pharmacy was open whenever a patient needed him, day or night.
A thoughtful man with a passion for reading, Sidney read thousands of books and shared his passion with his friends and family. He had many hobbies, especially those that required careful study, including genealogy, woodworking, and computers. He loved the outdoors and spent many hours fishing with family and friends. Sidney was active in many civic, professional, and community activities, serving as a leader in the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the American Cancer Society, among others.
Sidney was the devoted husband of the late Carol Moxley Haskins who passed away in 2008. He is survived by his daughters: Toni Haskins Gibson and Jill Rodibaugh Hollis; his son: Sidney Stewart Haskins II; and his grandchildren: Kirkland Gibson, Haley Haskins, Cale Gibson, Sidney Stewart Haskins III, Andrew Hollis, and Allyson Hollis.
A funeral service for Sidney will be held on Sunday, September 16, 2018 at 5 p.m. at the Haisten Funeral Home in McDonough, GA. The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
