Thomas Russell "Rusty, Pop" Barnes, of McDonough, Georgia, passed into the loving arms of his Savior on March 11, 2025. Born in Atlanta on June 30, 1955, Rusty lived a life marked by unwavering faith, deep love for his family, and a generous spirit that touched countless lives.
He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Rusty Jr.; his mother, Carolyn Brooks; his father, Thomas L. Barnes; and his brother, Terry Barnes. Rusty leaves behind his devoted wife, Wanda Lee Franks Barnes, his sweetheart, soulmate and best friend; his son, Jason, and daughter-in-law, Jessie; daughter-in-law, Susan; six adored grandchildren: Nathan, Brody, Madison, Cadyn, Kiley, and Jake; his sister, Tina Birdsong; as well as numerous nieces, great-nieces, and nephews.
Rusty's life story began in Atlanta, where he attended Roosevelt High School and met the love of his life, Wanda. As his sons grew, he became a dedicated coach at Rex Park, eventually serving as president of the baseball association for many years. His professional career spanned sales in the safety supply industry, from which he retired in 2018.
Retirement brought Rusty the joy of pursuing his passion for fishing with family and friends. In 2023, he and Wanda purchased a lake home where they created treasured memories.
Rusty's faith was the cornerstone of his life. He loved the Lord with all his heart and shared that love freely with those around him. He loved his church family immensely. He was a devoted servant, teaching Sunday school for 41 years, participating in Awana, and serving as a Deacon and on various committees, first at Ash Street Baptist Church in Forest Park and later at Southern Crescent Baptist Church in McDonough, which he helped establish. His passion for teaching the Word of God was evident in his hours of dedicated study. He found immense joy in witnessing and leading others to Christ.
His family was the center of his world. He was a fiercely loyal and generous husband, father, and grandfather. If they had a need or want, he made sure they got it. "Pop," as he was affectionately known, delighted in the company of his grandchildren and family. He was a talented air guitarist and loved to sing. He was a great and loyal friend to many. Despite health challenges, Rusty's faith remained unwavering. He continued to share his love for Jesus until his final days. He was a godly example to all who knew him, and it is certain that he was welcomed into heaven with the words, "Well done, my good and faithful servant."
A Celebration of Rusty’s life will be held on Sunday, March 16, 2025, at 4PM at Southern Crescent Baptist Church 334 Lake Dow Road McDonough, GA 30252.
