William E Peacock Jr, age 78 passed away on Wednesday, January 19, 2022. Bill was born in Atlanta, Ga and after graduating from East Atlanta High School spent his adult life serving the Metro Atlanta community.
He would spend 32 years protecting and serving as a member of the Dekalb County Police Force until his retirement as Captain in 2000.
Bill’s membership in the DeKalb Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #10 began in 1971. Over his almost 51 years of service, he served in several positions on the local board including lodge President for several years. He served as State FOP President from 1978 to 1983 when he became National Trustee for Georgia, where he served until 2016.
Bill was an advocate for officer rights and a spirited supporter for state and national legislation assisting police officers. He was Santa Claus for the “Shop With A Cop” / “Santa Cop” program at the lodge for many years, but as one member put it, he was Santa all year long because he made sure that each and every officer and member were represented and their voices heard.
Bill received multiple accommodations and awards throughout his many years of dedicated service to the Fraternal Order of Police at the local, state and national level.
He was recognized by his fellow lodge members as a “Life Member” and was nominated by his lodge for the State FOP Officer of the Year award twice, once in 1988 and again in 2016. He was the only member to ever receive the President’s award while still living in 2016 and Bill received the ultimate recognition when DeKalb Lodge #10 was named in his honor, The William E. Peacock, Jr. Lodge #10.
Bill's greatest legacy was built upon and will live on through his wife of 53 years, Shirley and their daughters Kelly and Katie (Matthew) and sons Andrew (Amy) and William.
Bill was always known as a man that cared for his family above all else and that lesson has been passed down to the light of his life, his grandchildren Nickelos, Maxee Jo, Addison, Carley, Brooke, and Lileigh.
A celebration of Bill's life will held at Eagles Landing Baptist Church on Tuesday January 25, 2022 at 5:00 pm. His family will receive friends from 4:00 pm until 5:00 pm.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill’s name to the William E. Peacock, Jr. Lodge#10 Charitable Foundation and their project, “My Brother’s House”, 1238 Ridge Avenue, Stone Mountain, Ga. 30083
