Benjamin “Ben” Aviles of McGregor died Friday afternoon, April 8, 2011, at the age of 80. Graveside services and interment will be 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at McGregor Cemetery under the direction of Cole Funeral Home, 1113 West Fifth Street, McGregor.
Mr. Aviles was born July 2, 1930, in Seguine, Texas, the son of the late Miguel and Virginia (Amador) Aviles where he was reared. He later left Seguin and moved to San Juan and later to Arkansas. He moved to Moody in 1952 from Seguin and to McGregor in 1968. On October 4, 1952, he married Cecilia Lucio in Waco, Texas.
Throughout his life, he was employed by various places to include the Santa Fe Railroad for nine years. He spent six years farming for Carl Beard in the Moody area. In 1967, he began his work with the City of McGregor in the Public Works Department until his 1995 retirement. In earlier years, he was a member of the Mexican American Association Hall in McGregor.
Survivors include his wife Cecilia of fifty-eight years; three sons, Victor Aviles of McGregor, Daniel Aviles of Florida, Adam Aviles of McGregor; four daughters, Diana Zapata and husband Jose of McGregor, Virginia Salazar and husband Carlos of Hewitt, Angela Cruz and husband Mario of Waco, Tommie Estrada and husband Steven of McGregor; seventeen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
Also preceding him in death was a daughter, Elma Aviles and his brothers and sisters.
Casketbearers will be Michael Aviles, Ricky Balderas, Jr., Steven Castillo, Steven Estrada, Jr., Emilio Jimenez and Willie Olvera.
