My first interaction with John, was a early morning return home with Jonnie, dropping her off from a night out. I was an active duty soldier with the 1st Cav at the time, and deployed a while after meeting him for that brief time. I was in Baghdad, Iraq, in a dining hall and a fellow soldier had commented to me that one of the kitchen staff was starring at me. Before leaving the dining hall, John approached and we started talking. Now mind you, John and i, with having such a brief encounter previously didn't really know each other, but we did recognize each other. In our conversation, we figured it out, and hugs and smiles quickly followed. I looked forward to each conversation with him for the week i was at his location. In what was one of the most terrible places (being a warzone), it still to this day brings a smile to my face knowing that i was able to make a connection from home. This is a memory i will forever cherish. Its with a heavy heart that i say good bye to someone i have true admiration for. John was a gentleman, and loved his family. I hope to bring honor to his memory, by living a good life, trying to be a better man each day, and upholding the morals and values he shared on a daily basis. My heartfelt condolences to his family, i will be sure to say a prayer for John and the family, and light a candle.

With Love and Respect,

David

I will miss uncle John. I hold him special to me because he like so many other veterans served our country. I enjoy hearing about his trips on the carriers. I still remember the fishing trips we went on and he always told me about his girls and his grand kids. When my son Cameron went in to the service he ended up in fort hood Texas. And so I got opportunity to visit John when I would drive Cameron back from California to Texas I would stay at Johns house and he would make us his famous stake and lobster to celebrate Cameron in the military. He will be missed but his service to us will never be forgotten. R.i.P love Johnny

My brother John will be deeply missed. I will always have fond memories of our childhood. I was also fortunate to travel with John in 1978 . We left Northfolk Va in route to California and visited many of our family members from Illinois, Oaklahoma and Idaho. It will always be a wonderful memory for me. Everyone always loved to be around John, he was always hospitable and liked to cook for everyone. Although we didn't get to see John alot due to his service duties, he was always in our thoughts and we enjoyed seeing him when we could. Rest in peace my brother. We love you and will miss you. Your sister Mary
