John Poe of Moody died Monday morning, April 4, 2011, at the age of 87. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Thursday, April 7, 2011, at First Baptist Church of Moody with Dr. Tom Shelton and Bud Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Moody Cemetery under the direction of Cole Chapel, 304 Eighth Street, Moody. Visitation will be 6 to 8 P.M. Wednesday at Cole Chapel.
Mr. Poe was born June 17, 1923, in Coryell County, Texas, the son of the late Thomas Riley and Edna Izora (Alton) Poe. He was reared in Eddy and began his education at Tick Hill School. He later attended Moody Schools Eddy High School. On October 22, 1944, he married the former Catherine Morris at Willow Grove. In his earlier years, he farmed with his father in the Moody area until he passed away suddenly in 1944. John continued farming the Moody area until 1960 at which time he became employed by Hooker Construction Company as a commercial carpenter. In 1986, he retired after devoting thirty-one years to the construction industry. He was a member of the Carpenters Local Union 622 in Waco. He later was employed in the maintenance department with Moody Independent School District until his retirement in 1999 as Maintenance Director.
Mr. Poe served on the Moody School Board and was a member of Liberty Hill Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School Director and Song Leader. He later became a member of First Baptist Church of Moody where he served the church as a deacon beginning June 4, 1967. He taught in the Youth Department and the Men’s Bible Class.
Throughout his life he enjoyed fishing, hunting, attending to livestock and helping his family and friends.
Also preceding him in death was a sister Olga Louise Poe, a brother, Jarrell Dean Poe.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-six years, Catherine Poe; a daughter Dianna Kay Vinson and husband Bill of Eddy; two sons, John Morris Poe and wife Deborah of Round Rock, Thomas Riley Poe and wife Martha of Eddy; seven grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.
