Mary was born December 9, 1916, in Oak Park, Illinois, the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Wangel. In 1934, she graduated from Morton high school in Illinois. She continued her education with nurses training and received her RN Degree at Oak Park Hospital. After enlisting in the Army in 1940, serving at Ft. Huachuca, Arizona, she transferred to the Army Air Force in 1941. She served in Yuma, Arizona from 1943 until the end of World War II. While serving in Yuma, there was a young man, Henry W. Searcy, also serving there. The two met and married May 1, 1945, in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1945 they moved to Waco where they made their home.
Mary taught at Hillcrest School of Nursing and later was employed by the Waco Public School System as a school nurse. She later served as night supervisor at Hillcrest Baptist Hospital in Waco until 1979. She continued her love for nursing with volunteer services at Gatesville Memorial Hospital and caring for others in need in the community of Oglesby. They moved to Oglesby in 1976 from Waco.
Mary will always be remembered for her unselfish love and nurturing care, not only for her family and friends, but anyone in need. Her love was generous and boundless and along with her faith in God, was felt by countless people throughout her life and has manifested itself in more ways than she could ever know.
Cooking, gardening and reading brought her daily pleasure to Mary, but above all else, she loved her family unconditionally and cherished visits from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Their pictures grace every wall in her home and not a day went by that she did not ask about them and kept them in her prayers.
Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Henry Searcy; a daughter, Leanne Guyton and husband Jim; grandson Jon Guyton and wife Suzanna, granddaughter, Jamie Locking and husband Darrin; great-grandchildren Coltin Locking, Juliet Guyton and Henry Finn Guyton.
