Obituary of Dr. Barton Leslie Hinkle
Dr. Barton Leslie Hinkle, 87, of Mechanicsville, Va. passed away on March 29, 2013. Our beloved father was born November 2, 1925 in Miami Beach, Fl to F. Leslie and Kathryn Paddock Hinkle. Following school years in Kankakee, Il. Attended Purdue university (BS degree, Chemical Engineering, 1949), Biarritz American University, Biarritz, France, the Institute of Textile Technology (MS degree, 1951), University of Virginia, and the Georgia Institute of Technology, (PhD degree, Chemical Engineering, 1953). Member Omega Chi Epsilon, national honorary chemical engineering fraternity and Alpha Kappa Lambda social fraternity, president of Kappa Chapter 1948-1949. US Army, 1944 -1945, European Theater during WWII. Married 1949 to Christine Smith of Nelsen County, VA (deceased 1955). Remarried to Sabrena Sanford of Orange County, VA. in 1959 (deceased 2007) Employed by Georgia Tech Experimental Station 1951 -1953, the DuPont corporation at Richmond, VA. Clinton, IA, and Wilmington, DE, 1953 -1984 in research, manufacturing, sales –technical and human resources positions, and by Electromagnetic Sciences, Inc, Norcross, GA 1984 – 1987 as VP Human Resources. A lifelong communicant in the Episcopal Church (St Paul’s, Kankakee, Il. Good Shepherd, Richmond, VA; St. John’s, Clinton, IA; St David’s Wilmington, DE; Grace, The Plains, VA and St Paul’s, Hanover, VA) he served as a Lay Eucharistic Minister, Junior and Senior Warden, taught Confirmation and Adult Religious Education Classes, conducted Morning Prayer worship services, and shared faith development in witnessing at many churches and at Faith Alive! and Cusillo gatherings. Survived by children Karen Wagamon, Wilson, NC; Douglas Hinkle (Barbara), Wilmington, DE; Jean Klele (Jon) Mechanicsville, VA. Maria Frawley, Chevy Chase, MD, and Elizabeth Landolt (Jim) Madison, VA and nine grandchildren; Kathryn, Linda, Anna, Christopher, Samuel, Emma, Olivia, Benjamin, and Jennifer, niece Monica Douglas, Portsmouth, VA, and nephew A. Barton Hinkle, Chesterfield County, VA children of his brother Douglas Paddock Hinkle (deceased 2011) In addition he was a beloved uncle to all of his nieces and nephews in the Sanford Family. Family members will greet friends and relatives at the Woody Funeral Home, Atlee Chapel, 9271 Shady Grove Rd, Mechanicsville, VA 23116 on April 5, 2013 from 5:00 to 8:00pm. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Hanover, VA on April 6, 2013 at 11:00am. Later interment will be private.
