Brenda was a graduate of Lee-Davis High School, attended Eastern Christian College, and Roanoke Bible College. She furthered her technical education at Richmond Engineering and AT&T, where she built a successful career as a circuit board designer. Her intellect and determination were evident throughout her professional life, and she took great pride in her work.
Creativity filled Brenda’s life. She found joy in sewing, crocheting, and jewelry making, often sharing her talents with those she loved. She was a free, independent, and loving spirit, living life on her own terms. She enjoyed rocking out to her favorite classic artists—Janis Joplin, Tom Petty, Freddie Mercury, Bob Marley, and Jimi Hendrix.
She was known for her determination, stubbornness, sharp intellect, and her unyielding devotion to giving. If someone were in need, Brenda would not only give the shirt off her back but also her even last paycheck. What endeared her even more to us was that she gave us her time, a listening ear, and compassionate words in times we needed them. Above all else, she cherished being a mother, sister, aunt, daughter, and grandmother. She will be deeply missed and always loved.
Brenda is survived by her two cherished daughters, Elizabeth Griffin (Fuwei Guo) and Rachael Scruggs; her beloved grandchild, Phillip Guo; her mother, Mary Hartman Hughes; her brother, L. W. Hughes Jr.; and her niece, Mary Beth Hughes.
Relatives and friends are invited to Brenda's visitation at Woody Funeral Home, 9271 Shady Grove Rd., Mechanicsville, VA, on Thursday, January 8, from 4-7 PM. A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 9, at 11 AM at the same venue. Interment will follow at Gethsemane Church of Christ Cemetery, Mechanicsville, VA. Flowers are accepted; her favorite was roses.
