He is survived by his wife, Maureen Haynes; his daughter, Claire Morris (Mike), and their children, Lindsay and Cormac; his stepchildren, Dylan Greiner, Kate Greiner (Eric Welp), Tyler Walters, and Kim Roszel (Zach); and his grandchildren, Rowan, Brodie, Matilda, Olivia, and Brooklyn. He also leaves behind countless cousins, family members, and friends, including his loyal dog, Gordon, and his beloved turtle, Marvin, who was with him for over 50 years.
Bruce was a natural leader who found joy in connecting with others—whether over a glass of PBR, giving advice on tractor repair, or exchanging a warm smile with customers at the Ashland Farmers Market.
He dedicated much of his life to serving his country and community. After graduating from Hermitage High School, he joined the 5th Special Forces and proudly served in the Vietnam War. Upon returning home, he joined the Airborne Reserves and later earned a BA in history and Masters in Public Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University. He went on to work for the State of Virginia in the Department of Transportation and Taxation, retiring as the Executive Secretary of the Virginia Compensation Board. From 1980 to 1996, Bruce also served as a longtime council member, mayor, and vice mayor of the Town of Ashland, VA.
A man of many interests, Bruce loved staying busy. He spent countless hours alongside Maureen tending to the pasture at Red Dog Farm, growing Hanover tomatoes, potatoes, corn, and more to sell at the Ashland Farmers Market. He had a deep passion for tractors and the Model A Club, organizing drives through the Virginia countryside to visit historical sites and enjoy good barbecue. A skilled craftsman, he enjoyed woodworking, making furniture and cabinets, and restoring old homes. He took a keen interest in researching his family genealogy and sharing stories with many surviving members. He also had an encyclopedic knowledge of history, which he eagerly shared with anyone willing to listen.
Bruce never met a stranger and created lasting memories with all who knew and loved him. He is deeply missed and will be remembered for the inspiration, hard work, and kindness he brought to the world.
Bruce had a special fondness for turtles and rescue dogs. In honor of his passions, and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Box Turtle Sanctuary of Central Virginia or to a local animal shelter.
A gathering for family and friends will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Woody Funeral Home – Atlee Chapel, 9271 Shady Grove Rd, Mechanicsville. With a time to share memories beginning at 3:00pm. Attire is casual.
