

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Martha Louise Smith; and sisters, Jean Utley and Mary Lou Pennell.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 37 years, Margo Smith; sons, Eric Ashton Smith and Justin Reed Smith; brother, Lewis Smith Jr; and numerous other family members.
Charles was a hardworking man, spending over 30 years with Bear Island Paper Company before retiring. Even in retirement, he continued to serve his community through his work at the Hanover Transfer Station, where he was known for finding and sharing little treasures with friends and family.
He had a deep love for golf and enjoyed playing softball in both a church league and senior league. Charles was also a proud Cub Scout leader when his son's were growing up, he loved sharing the scouting experience with both of them, creating lasting memories and life lessons along the way. Family meant everything to Charles. He cherished time spent with his children and was a proud granddad to four beloved grand pups. He was always willing to lend a hand to neighbors and taught those around him the importance of hard work, generosity, and living with purpose.
A visitation for Charles will be held Tuesday, June 10, 2025 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Woody Funeral Home-Atlee, 9271 Shady Grove Road, Mechanicsville, VA 23116. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM. An interment will be held at Signal Hill Memorial Park, 12360 Hanover Courthouse Rd, Hanover, VA 23069.
