Graduating from nursing school and being thrust into the fast paced environment of an intensive care unit can be a bit intimidating to say the least. Luckily for me I was given a wonderful, experienced nurse to help me make that transition. That nurse was Diane. Diane was patient and kind. Her vast knowledge of all things related to the cardiac patient and the critical care patient in general translated to a tremendous learning experience for me. Beside the technological aspect of the job, the medical jargon and science to be learned, she demonstrated a genuine caring manner as well. It was not uncommon for her to offer her patients a back rub to help them sleep in a frightening and often a noisy environment.
So in retrospect I own so much to Diane for getting me off to a good start in my nursing career. She was the perfect role model and when she was in charge we knew we were in good hands as a unit.
Her beautiful “ light up a room” smile will always be how I remember Diane.

I worked with Diane for 13 years in the CICU at MCV. It was a privilege to work with Diane. She always had your back and her caring way was such a positive influence. Your mother was the type of person who inspired integrity in those around her. She encouraged those of us in the ICU to be the best nurses we could be.
Diane and I drove together to attend Pattie Bragg’s wedding. We got terribly lost and yet laughed the entire time. I will ALWAYS remember her sweet smile and her beautiful nature.
I wish you peace and comfort in the days ahead.
Sincerely,
Sally Burnam
