Etta Mae was known to her loved ones as Ma, Grandmother, Grandma, Sister Hall and Etta Mae. From the moment she was “Born Again” to the day she passed, she never missed a moment to share the love of God with others.
Grandmother was born on June 27, 1932 to Henry and Mamie Link. The Link family lived on a farm in Floyd County, where they grew their own crops and livestock. She graduated from Check High School, where she enjoyed playing on the girl’s basketball team and became the Valedictorian of her class.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Herman Hall, her brother’s Burrel (infant) and Henry Clay Link, and sister’s Maleta Walters, Pauline Reed and Catherine Vest. She is survived by her two sister-in-laws Shelby Link and Betty McFarlane, her baby sister Patricia Nichols (Freddie) and her four sons Bruce (Marilyn), David (Tanya), Tim (Shelia), and Bill( Mina) and five grandchildren Amy (Todd), Travis (Julia), Philip, Joshua (Kylie) and Victoria (Kenny) and eight great grandchildren Christopher, Richard, Ruthie Jane, Sarah Beth, Nolan, Thatcher, Amelia and Claire.
In 1951, Herman Hall and Etta Mae Link were married in Floyd County Virginia. She often enjoyed reminiscing about waking up early to fix a big breakfast for all the hungry men before work and school, then Etta would head off to work herself at Sears and later in life, working for Best Locking Systems . Etta Mae and her family attended Meadowood Church of God, where she taught an Adult Sunday School class, for more than 30 years.
Her favorite hobbies included reading the Bible, sewing, gardening and baking. Some of Etta Mae’s most requested recipes were her peanut butter balls, blueberry muffins, and of course her famous brownies with chocolate peanut butter frosting. But, her greatest gift was listening to others and finding a way to respond with Christ-like humility. Grandmother once told her great grandchildren, “Put the Lord first in your life, and let Him direct your path (Luke 10:27).”
Grandmother was a kind and meek woman, who devoted her life to serving the Lord. Some of her favorite songs were “Blessed Assurance”, written by Fanny Crosby, a blind hymn writer in 1873 and “He Abides” composed by Doc Shanks in 1922, a neighbor who lived down the street from Herman and Etta, early in their marriage. Both songs echo the assurance of God’s love and His daily desire to be close to us.
We will miss our sister, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, but we know that we will reunite again in Heaven with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
A visitation for Etta will be held Friday, August 1, 2025 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm at Woody Funeral Home-Atlee, 9271 Shady Grove Road, Mechanicsville, VA 23116. A graveside service will take place on Saturday, August 2, 2025 at 11:00am at Restvale Cemetery, 7311 Floyd Hwy N., Copper Hill, VA 24079.
