Herman H. Duke, Jr., 55, known by Herman, J.R. and Junior, died Monday, March 16, 2020. He is survived by his dad, Herman Duke, Sr.; his partner, Mary Borum; Lisa Duke; five children, Courtney Singleton, Jessica Duke, Megan Morman, Bobby Johnson and Braxton Borum; three granddaughters, Paislee and Lacie Singleton and Eva Morman.

He was best known for his love of baseball and fishing as a youth; learning plaster and drywall from his dad; to playing and teaching others the game of slow pitch softball. His knuckle ball pitching style was every batters’ nightmare. When his turkey ears heard the opposing team complaining about it, he went into the dugout smiling and laughing.

He never met a stranger and was always the life of the scene.

A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at a later date, day and time to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, please send a donation in memory of him to Virginia’s Non-game Wildlife Program at https://license.gooutdoorsvirginia.com. This program survives only by donations.

I never played softball on the same team as Junior, but played several years on opposing teams. He always had a smile, and seemed like one of the truly nice guys in the league. So sorry for Mary and the rest of the family. He will be missed - we lost him way too early!

I didn't know JR personally but I did play against him in softball. Heck of a player! Sad that's he's gone too soon.

Almost 13 years ago, I met Junior. From day was hes always treated me like his daughter. Jessica and i are best friends so i was always at his house. He would always make me laugh when i was sad or make food when we were hungry. He never thought twice about any kind thing he ever did. He was one of the kindest men i knew and god blessed me to be able to call him my second dad. He will forever be missed.♥️

To Mary and Family,
Ron and I were so very sorry to learn of "Duke's" untimely passing. He will be missed. I was always delighted when he called me "Aunt Nita."

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

I met Junior about 15 years ago, you guessed it the softball field. He was an opponent that turned into a close friend and teammate. We enjoyed many beers, good times, and good laughs while playing softball, richmond race tailgates and deer hunting. I felt like Jr treated me like one of his own, gave advice or pointers on hitting, hunting and when we paired up at corn hole we were unstoppable. Those are some of the many things I will miss but what I’ll truly miss will be that smile and cheers he had with everyone. I could go on for days about the memory’s I’ll never forget. So it’s not good bye it see you later Junior.
Cheers bud and this Buds for you.

I remember so many times being on ball field with Herman. He and I were very close for years, even though I had loss contact with him and Mary over last few I always talked to people that talked with him and new how he was doing. My daughter, Brandy referred to him as Herman Daddy when she was little, she is now in her mid 30's so that tells you how long I knew him. Love you guy and you will be missed greatly 💔

Played in 100s of tournaments with Jr drank 1000s of beers and cigars , Horseshoes legendary Pig roasts and Proud to have asked Jr and Mary to be my oldest Son Aaron’s Godparents!! Helped anyone at the drop of a dime never asked for anything in return loved him like a brother and though we only spoke sporadically and saw each other maybe a few times over the last 5-6 years I’d like to think He knew that and felt the same way !! I will miss you my Brother !! The world is a lot less shiny without you in it ..Love your Brother ...Jason
