Born September 11, 1936 in Chicago, IL to Hugh and Margaret (nee Durkin) Naughton, Hugh’s roots in the predominantly Irish Catholic community provided the foundation for his remarkable life. In 1958, Hugh married his wife of 64 years, Jessie (nee Oresto) Naughton, graduated with his Bachelors degree from DePaul University and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army. It was a busy year! While at DePaul, 6’6” Hugh was a star member of the DePaul Men’s Basketball team.
During much of Hugh’s 20 year military career he was stationed overseas in Europe and Hawaii, including being a Vietnam war veteran. Hugh earned his Masters Degree from George Washington University and was a teacher at the National War College in Washington, DC. A decorated war hero, Colonel Hugh retired from the Army in 1978 and began a stellar 30+ year civilian career in the information technology industry.
In addition to the Knights of Columbus and Our Lady of Lourdes, Hugh was an intensely proud member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
In addition to his wife Jessie, Hugh is survived by his son, Vincent P. (Lisa) Naughton and his daughter Denise M (Carter) Robertson, sister-in-law, Rose Ramoki (nee Oresto), his brothers John (Raydeen) Naughton and Bob (Ellen) Naughton, sister Marguerite Anderson (nee Naughton) and sister-in-law Marylou Naughton. He is survived also by his four grandchildren, Vincent Naughton, Denise Naughton, Army Staff Sergeant H. Carter (Candace) Robertson III, and Jessie (Kenneth) Robertson as well as his great-grandchildren H. Carter Robertson IV (Robbie), Aiden Robertson, Koby Robertson, Harper Robertson, Dade Zoldork and Deaton Warren. And many many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
Hugh was adored by everyone who knew him. Though his mind and body were failing, his spirit and enthusiasm to make each day his best day was always there.
Catholic mass funeral arrangements with full military honors will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes on Veteran’s Day Thursday Nov 11 at 4 pm followed by a fun Irish “wake” at Sine’s on Cary Street to celebrate life. Please wear masks as appropriate. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Alzheimer’s Association
