Born on January 13, 1947, in Baltimore, MD, Janice was the daughter of Belva Berry Gregory and Roland Ernest Gregory. During her adolescence, she went to live with her Aunt, Thelma Corning Berry, and Uncle, Wayland Owen Berry.
For the majority of her working life, Janice served as a legal secretary, bringing a strong work ethic, writing skill, capability, and a clear-eyed determination to the work she did. In the later years of her life, she found deep fulfillment in caring for animals as a pet sitter, devoting herself with tenderness and attentiveness to the many furry best friends entrusted to her. She loved her home, her flower garden, and her friends, and she held especially close her daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter.
Janice is survived by her daughter, Joelle Messerschmidt (Lars); grandchild, Meadow Messerschmidt; and cousins that felt like siblings, Dale Berry, Gene Berry and Frank Berry.
Janice will be remembered with affection for her devotion to family and friends, and for the comfort and joy she found in her pets. Those who knew her will recall her sharp wit, her resilience, and the enduring love she carried for the people she cherished most. Those who loved her find comfort imagining her in heaven and a place filled with peace, sunshine, blooming flowers, and every beloved pet waiting to greet her.
A private gathering will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Richmond SPCA in her name and memory at https://richmondspca.org/get-involved/donate/
