Jeanette S. Newman, RN, passed away peacefully on her 79th birthday, Feb. 18, 2012. Born near Radford, Va., she graduated from William Fleming High School in Roanoke in 1951 and from the Roanoke Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1954. She worked as a registered nurse at the hospital and for the neurosurgery practice of Drs. Weaver and Tice in Roanoke. She married Jack H. Newman in 1956, a union that would last the next 50 years. The family lived in Blacksburg and the Philadelphia area before moving to Richmond in 1962. Jeanette worked in nursing and supervisory positions at the former Camelot Hall Nursing Home and Libbie Convalescent Center in Richmond. Always a nurturer, she said her foremost joy was her love and care for her three sons. But she also doted on her household cats (including purebred Himalayans, which she bred for a number of years) and cared lovingly for Jack for several years after he was disabled by a stroke. She was predeceased by her husband; a sister, Gladys Faye Semones; and a brother, Robert C. Semones. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Jack Newman, Jr. and Kim Newman of Christiansburg, Jonathan and Charlotte Newman of Royersford, Pa., and Joel and Lisa Newman of Ashland; six grandchildren; and a host of extended family members and friends. The family wishes to thank Bon Secours Hospice and the staff of Care Advantage, especially Xylana Howell, for their excellent care during her declining health. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Atlee Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 9271 Shady Grove Rd., where a funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday. Entombment at Signal Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Online condolences at www.woodyfuneralhomeatlee.com.
