Margaret O'Sullivan Flanagan

Born in Ireland in 1942, Margaret was the youngest daughter of six children. At the tender age of 16, she made the courageous journey across the Atlantic to build a new life in the United States. Driven by deep faith and a desire to serve, she spent several years in a convent in Texas before discovering her ultimate calling in the classroom.

Margaret dedicated over 60 years of her life to teaching. As an educator, she was legendary for her unique blend of "tough love" and absolute acceptance of every child who walked through her door. She held her students to high standards because she believed in their potential, creating a safe harbor for generations of children who knew they were profoundly valued just as they were.

Outside of the classroom, Margaret was an avid reader who could always be found immersed in a good book. She enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, most notably a cold glass of Pinot Grigio shared in the company of good friends and family, where her sharp wit and warm Irish spirit truly shone.

Margaret is survived by her devoted daughter, Tina; her cherished grandson, Ryan; her sisters Sheila and Nancy, and her faithful feline companion, Luigi. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Thomas Flanagan; her parents; Timothy and Margaret; and several siblings.

A celebration of Margaret’s remarkable life will be held at Woody Funeral Home - Atlee Chapel (9271 Shady Grove Rd, Mechanicsville, VA 23116) on September 26, 2026. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation that will begin at 10am with a service to follow at 11am.
