

Robert Mays Barnes Jr. passed away on March 29, 2026 at St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond Virginia. Robert, Bob, Barnes the oldest of eight children was born January 12,1940 in Clarksburg WV. He was a graduate of Victory High School Class of 1957. Along with school he started working jobs in childhood in order to contribute to the family finances. As a young adult he went on to learn the tire business, a profession he loved and continued to do his entire life.
Bob was a family man. He loved to hear how everyone was doing and managed to keep up with everybody, especially his siblings, children, and grandchildren. Bob did not have traditional hobbies. What he really loved was people. He loved talking with people, working with people and most of all helping people. For fun he enjoyed singing hymns in church and watching WVU sports.
Bob was a spiritual man who devoted his life to God, family and helping others.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jone Adams Barnes, his parents Robert Barnes Sr. and Josephine Barberio Barnes, and grandson Blaine Charcandy. He was also preceded by brothers James Barnes, Michael Randy Barnes, John Barnes and Sam Barnes, sisters Mary Barnes, Judy "Mitzi" Andrew, Rose Ella Matheney, sister-in-law Deloris Gabriel Barnes and brother-in laws David Andrew, John Matheny, Kennith Adams, Robert Adams, their wives and Jack Adams.
He is survived by his wife Virginia Barnes, children Suzanna Johnson (Rob Johnson) and Robert Barnes III (Robin Burford Barnes), grandsons Jeremy Barnes (Miranda Vance), Sam Johnson (Erin Kennedy), Nathaniel Barnes (Jessica Cera), Zachary Barnes and Jacob Barnes, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by sister-in-laws Sherry Barthalow Barnes, Betts DeMuth Barnes, Cathy Leasburg Barnes, Florence Adams and Virginia's children Kevin Sharon (Cathy Sharon), John Simmons (Dawn Simmons), Sam Carter (Julie Carter) and grandchildren.
We will honor Bob with two Memorial services:
A service will be held on April 18, 2026, at Hillcrest Baptist Church, 11342 Hillcrest Rd., Hanover, VA 23069. Visitation will take place from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, followed by a Memorial Service at 2:00 pm.
An additional service will be held on April 25, 2026, at Highlawn Baptist Church, 2304 Jefferson Ave., Saint Albans, WV 25177. Visitation will take place from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm, followed by a Memorial Service at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the churches listed above.
