Born in Muskegon, Michigan, Steve was the son of Robert and Carol LaPres. He graduated from Muskegon Catholic Central in 1983 and went on to attend Ferris State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. Steve built a successful career in corporate loss prevention and was respected for his strong work ethic, integrity, and commitment to helping others.
More than any professional accomplishment, Steve's greatest joy and proudest achievement was his family. He was a devoted husband and father whose life was centered around those he loved most. His love for his family was evident in everything he did. He cherished watching his children compete in sports and took immense pride in their accomplishments, both on and off the field. Some of his favorite memories were made during family beach vacations, fishing trips, and serving as the beloved "lodge dad" on family ski adventures.
Steve deeply valued friendship and enjoyed gathering with friends for card games, where spirited competition was always accompanied by laughter and camaraderie. He also found strength, encouragement, and fellowship through his church small group.
Steve is survived by the love of his life and wife of 30 years, Jessica (Altruda) LaPres; his children, Parker, Avery, and Riley LaPres; his mother, Carol LaPres; his siblings, Greg LaPres, Ruth Carlson, Sue Emelander, Ann Hindes, Diane Rudholm, and Dan LaPres; his sister-in-law, Jill Altruda; and his brother-in-law, Matthew Altruda.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert LaPres, and his mother-in-law, June Ekerman.
Above all else, Steve will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to his family and the genuine friendships he cultivated throughout his life. His kindness, dedication, generosity, and love leave a lasting legacy in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
Private family services will be held in Muskegon, Michigan, on June 28, 2026.
