William "Frank" Franklin Lumpkin Jr., 78, of Mechanicsville, Virginia, passed away on May 23, 2026. Born on August 29, 1947, he will be remembered with deep respect and enduring affection by all who knew him.
Frank dedicated his life to the grocery business, serving as manager of multiple Safeway stores in Richmond before later moving to Memphis where he worked with independent grocers. Alongside his work in management, Frank brought a creative eye to his trade, using his artistic talents to create advertisements for many grocery stores, work that reflected both his skill and the steady care he brought to the people and communities he served.
Frank was the son of the late William “Bill” and Emma Lumpkin, and he was also preceded in death by his wife, Suzanne Pridham Lumpkin. Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Candace Lumpkin Grimes (Christopher); grandsons, Zachary William Grimes and Benjamin Wade Grimes; and brother, Robert Edgar Lumpkin. He is also survived by Gail Barrett.
Throughout his life, Frank found joy in pursuits that brought people together. He bowled duck pin in a league with his parents, and he once earned recognition as a city champ pool player. In later years, he especially loved playing golf. His creativity extended well beyond his professional life; he had a natural artistic ability, and he was widely known as an incredible cook. Many sought him out for his meat and seafood recipes, a testament not only to his talent in the kitchen, but also to the warmth and generosity with which he shared it. His home reflected what he loved—decorated in nautical style, highlighted by a cherished lighthouse collection.
Many described Frank as one of the most loved and generous people you could ever meet. His life was marked by quiet devotion, a giving spirit, and a presence that made others feel welcome and valued. His memory will remain a lasting comfort and a steady light to those who loved him. Above all, his greatest joy in life was his grandsons, who held a special place in his heart and in the legacy he leaves behind.
A service will be held at 11am on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at Woody Funeral Home - Atlee Chapel, 9271 Shady Grove Rd., Mechanicsville, VA 23116.
