A.T. Jayashankar ("Jay") was born on September 6, 1950 in the town of Vishnampet in Tamil Nadu, India. He passed away April 14, 2021 in Memphis, TN. Jay grew up in the small town of Angarai before attending St. Stephen's College in Delhi, India. He graduated in 1971 with a Master's degree in Operations Research. He moved to Kuwait in 1972 to work as a Computer Systems Analyst at the Ministry of Planning in Kuwait City. In 1976, Jay married Veni Ranganathan and had two boys, Ravi and Ashok in the following years.
The family moved to Memphis, TN in 1991 after the Gulf War, and Jay lived in Memphis ever since. He worked as a Systems Analyst at Fedex and subsequently at International Paper.
He will be remembered for his sense of humor, his ardent love of the Indian cricket team (Kapil Dev was his all time favorite) and his attacking style of play in club-level chess.
A.T. Jayashankar is survived by his wife Veni, his two sons Ravi and Ashok, his mother Parvathi, his brother Sivaram, and two grandchildren (Sachin and Shyla) who brought him immense joy in the final chapter of his life.
Visitation will be held from 4:30 pm to 6:30pm on April 17, 2021 at Family Funeral Care, 4925 Summer Avenue, Memphis, TN.
