We gather today to remember and celebrate the remarkable life of Billy Presley Hall Sr., a man shaped by incredible resilience, deep-rooted work ethic, and dedication to his family and faith.
Born on October 30, 1933 in Henry County, Tennessee, to Ethbert Presley Hall and Mary Loriene Clement, Billy’s early life was defined by the rustic realities of rural America. Growing up as an only child on farms in Henry and Weakley counties, he learned the value of hard work early on helping tend crops, milking cows, and splitting firewood long before his family had electricity or indoor plumbing. He enjoyed playing with his cousins, on of which was Jennie Conway. He said it was like they were brother and sister.
Billy’s journey was notably marked by perseverance through adversity. In his youth, he battled severe health challenges, including rheumatic fever at age 10 that left him bedfast and learning to walk again, as well as lifelong respiratory hurdles. Yet, these early hardships forged an unbreakable spirit. He worked hard to earn his high school diploma, learned the intricate trade of linotype operator in Nashville, and embarked on a dedicated career in the printing and newspaper industry that took him many places including Mississippi, Illinois, Kentucky, Florida, Arizona, and eventually his long-term home in Memphis, Tennessee.
At the heart of his life was a profound commitment to his spiritual path and his family. He found deep purpose in his service within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving as a temple ordinance worker alongside his wife, Janice, and cherishing moments of connection with his children and grandchildren. He leaves behind 4 sons of his own - Kelvin, David, Dwayne, and Presley. In addition, he was a father to 3 stepsons- Stephen, David, and Allen and stepdaughter Joy. Furthermore, he leaves behind 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Billy’s story is a testament to endurance-from a country boy driving a horse-drawn plow to a seasoned linotype operator, husband, father, and provider. He leaves behind a rich legacy of hard work, survival against the odds, and a lifetime of memories- and now, finally, the sweet reunion of being with his beloved wife, Betty, who passed away in 1995.
May he rest in peace.
