Born on May 25, 1938, in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, the son of Dorothy Amanda Brierley Colby and Gordon Leonard Colby. He was one of seven immediate siblings —sisters Beverly, Donna, and Deborah, and brothers Richard, Bruce, and Ronald, with a half-brother Donald.
He honorably served in the United States Marine Corps from 1957 to 1963 – an experience that shaped the enduring qualities that defined him: integrity, discipline, and unwavering loyalty. He remained, in spirit and heart, an eternal Marine.
After his military service, David built an extensive and respected career in banking. He became a trusted leader in agricultural lending, culminating in his role as Senior Vice President at Union Planters Bank, retiring from Regions Bank post-merger, leaving a lasting impact on colleagues and clients alike. He shared his deep knowledge, steady leadership, and commitment to the agricultural community by serving on the Board of Directors for the Mid-South Grain Inspection Service.
He was preceded in death by his son David Gordon Colby of Memphis, TN, and is survived by his daughters Sheryl Taylor of Munford, TN, Sandra Hurley of Bartlett, TN; his sons Derek (Christy Lee) and Kyle Colby both of Germantown, TN; and his stepson Brian Forrester (Claudia) of Nashville, TN.
He was a loving father and grandfather, known for his quiet strength, sharp wit, and generous heart. His legacy lives on in his eleven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and the many family members and friends who knew and loved him.
He led a life of honor, humility, and purpose—from the barracks to the boardroom, and most importantly, at home with his family.
