Doris Wanda House

Doris was born August 12, 1927, in Elk City, Oklahoma, to Fred and Lorena Abernathy, and grew up there. She attended Anderson College in Anderson, Indiana, where she met and married Robert F. House, a World War II veteran who served at Pearl Harbor and was awarded the Bronze Star. Together they raised their two daughters on a farm in Noblesville, Indiana.

In 1975, Doris and Robert retired to Springfield, Oregon, where they built a beautiful home overlooking the Willamette Valley. After Robert's passing in 1983, Doris moved to Denton, Texas, where she worked for the City of Denton, before settling in Olive Branch, Mississippi, in 2003. In both Denton and Olive Branch, her homes were known for their beautiful flower gardens, a reflection of her green thumb. She moved to Heritage at Irene Woods in Memphis in 2018 and made her final home at StoryPoint in Collierville in 2022, where she treasured her wonderful group of friends.

Doris had a strong and abiding faith in God and was a member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the "Y Knot" quilt group, and she delighted in sewing, beading, jewelry making, ceramics, and countless other crafts. She enjoyed her classes at the Y in Olive Branch and was happiest surrounded by friends, flowers, and birds, especially eagles.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert F. House, and her grandson, David Gilpin.

Doris is survived by her daughters, Tanja Kellum (Alan) and Chinita Stalzer (Randy); her grandchildren, Sarah Stalzer (Steve Maccharoli), Aaron Stalzer (Karolina), Isaac Stalzer, and Eli Stalzer (Ashley); her great-grandchildren, Aidan Stalzer, Austin Stalzer, Asaiah Stalzer, Kayden Stalzer, and Brooklyn Spohn; and the many friends who loved her dearly.

A service celebrating her life will be held on her birthday, August 12, 2026. Details will be shared by the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Doctors Without Borders, or Habitat for Humanity.

Nearly a century of life, filled with faith, family, friendship, and flowers. She will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever loved.
