Doris was born in Memphis on January 8, 1928. She grew up in the Cooper-Young Neighborhood and graduated from Central High School in 1946. She attended Memphis State College and graduated with a degree in childhood education in 1950. While at Memphis State, she was a proud member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority and was a past president of the Alumni Chapter.
Doris was a long-time member of Galloway Methodist Church where she met and married Ernest H. Sigman, Jr. in 1950. Both she and Ernie served Galloway in many ways. She was a past president of the United Methodist Women, served on the Administrative Council and other various committees. She also has served as Superintendent of the Children’s Division. Both she and Ernie were members of the choir. They moved their membership to St. Luke’s United Methodist Church when Galloway closed.
She taught first grade at Grahamwood Elementary School in Memphis from 1950 until 1953 and then went on to become a homemaker and volunteer. She was very involved in The Duration Club of Memphis, an organization that works with mentally handicapped children. For 24 years, she provided children transportation to and from school, worked in the classroom, and was on the Board of Directors. She was a member and past president of the Auxiliary to the Memphis Dental Society, which assists in promoting dental health. Being a member of the Galloway Bunko Group, she enjoyed the fellowship of long-time friends.
Doris was preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, Ernest H. Sigman Jr., her parents Gertrude H. and Thomas L. Wood, Sr. and brother Thomas L. Wood Jr. She is survived by her sons, Dennis A. Sigman (Kathi) of Spring Hill, Tennessee and Ronald W. Sigman (Debbie) of Benton, Arkansas. She leaves five grandchildren: Allison Jackson (Keith) of Knoxville, Tennessee, Stephen Sigman (Stephanie) of Newton, New Jersey, Bradley Sigman (Holly) of Annapolis, Maryland, Ashley Eyles (Ryan) of Memphis and Benjamin Sigman of Memphis. She is also survived by four great grandchildren Charles Jackson, Patrick Jackson, Abram Eyles and Cohen Eyles.
The family will receive guests Saturday, September 16, 2023 from 9:00 am until funeral services begin at 10:00 am all at Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee 38119 . Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Luke’s United Methodist Church or the charity of the donor’s choice.
