Edward Lynn Boyd, age 93, of Memphis, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, July 24, 2022. Edward was born August 8, 1928, in Memphis, to Howard Milton Boyd and Martha Hazel Winston Boyd. He was one of three siblings: Martha Lee Kizer and Donald Bradford Boyd. He graduated from William Nottingham High School, Syracuse, New York, Class of 1946.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army, in 1946 and served in the U.S. Air Force as a mechanic until 1949. Edward attended Auburn University and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, in 1953. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service (Idaho) during the summer breaks. He attended the Graduate School at the University of Chicago and studied urban geography which led to an interest and career in traffic engineering.
In 1958, while working in Chicago, he met Cora Avie Dickie, who was working at Moody Bible Institute. They married on September 19, 1959 at Beulah Baptist Church, Albertville, Alabama. They lived in Chicago from 1959 until 1962 and then moved to Tallahassee, Florida, where their daughter Nancy was born. They later moved to New Haven, Connecticut where edward studied traffic engineering at Yale University. After a brief stop in Orlando, Florida, Edward and his family moved to Memphis in 1970 and began his career with the City of Memphis and retired in 2000.
Edward loved the Lord and came to know Him at an early age. Edward and Avie were members of First Evangelical Church since 1970, where he served as a deacon for many years. He served on the board of Evangelical Christian School for 5 years, was active with the Gideons for over 30 years, and with his wife was highly involved in supporting international student ministry at the University of Memphis. He also enjoyed working in his yard and spending time with his grandsons.
Edward was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Boyd Webb; son-in-law, Boyd Houston Webb III; and grandsons, Brandon Boyd Webb and Cameron Alan Webb. He is also survived by his brother, Donald.
The family will receive friends and relatives on Friday, July 29 beginning at 9:00 AM with the funeral service at 10:00 AM, all at Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee 38119. Interment will immediately follow at Memphis Memory Gardens.
