Mrs Mitchell and family, you probably don't remember me but I'm one of the students that Rob is named for, the Terry of Robert Terry.
I was so proud and happy that you and Coach would think enough of me to name your  son after me and Robert (Bobby).
Coach was a beautiful man and I hope the Lord shines his face upon you and the family.
I will always love and respect Coach.

Pete Mitchell was my mentor & friend.  He was the first person to put a golf bag in my hand and he got me motivated to learn insurance. It has been 2 years & now I’m very known on social media because of golf & I am fully licensed in insurance producer who is about to get my own agency. He was such an amazing and intelligent person & always wore a smile. I found out about his passing on yesterday 11-9-2021 from one of my clients.. I had been calling him over weeks but I got no answer it pained me so bad that I missed his home going celebration because he was someone that played a big role in my life. I am so grateful that god allow his light to shine on us all   Thank you so much Pete I will never forget everything you’ve ever done for me !

Sybil,  your dear husband Pete was a remarkable man who left a beautiful legacy of
helping others in need , building character in young people  , but most importantly, he
left you the legacy of four wonderful children  and several super grandchildren who will forever keep Pete's memory present . Lastly, he was blessed with a 62 year long marriage to you,  the love of his life.

I was always in awe of Uncle Peter.  Whenever I saw him, in my eyes,  he looked stately and full of confidence and advice, as I was thinking,  “that’s my uncle!”.   At one of our Family Reunions, he told stories about his life and being with my Dad Charlie.  So sad,  I did not have a voice or video recorder available at that moment because his words are now gone. We love and will miss you Uncle Peter.

Praise God for allowing Uncle Peter's light to shine on the world.  Uncle Peter was a leader in business and sports, a mentor to many, someone to aspire to be like and cool, calm and collected as anyone that I've ever met.  I appreciated him so much the one year that I spent in Memphis as a young boy, he made sure that I attended Melrose football games and even allowed me to ride on the bus with the Larry Finch led Melrose basketball team in the state tournament.  #Strength&Wisdom, #StriveforGreatness, #TrueLeader, #TeamFirst, #Trailblazer, #ILoveYouUnclePeter

Uncle Peter was a wonderful man. I will truly miss him. I will never forget him driving me around in his red corvette and talking on the phone at the same time. We shared laughs and meals. 

I met Mr. Pete Mitchell through my father,  George Blancett. They have been involved  together on numerous projects, both business and personal, over the more than 60 years they have known each other. During this time a very strong relationship and friendship between the two evolved.
I would not be amiss in describing their relationship as  “Best Friends”.
Whenever Pete Mitchell’s name was mentioned in conversation, it would elicit the most tender and heartfelt smile on my Dad’s face. This smile would then be followed by Dad speaking of what an outstanding man his friend, Pete Mitchell, is.  
Pete was such a loyal, positive, enthusiastic cheerleader, mentor and leader to his community and his friends. 
I thank God for placing Mr. Pete Mitchell in my Dad’s life.
Pete will be missed by all whose lives he touched and who were blessed to have known him.

My condolence to the family of  Mr. Eldridge 'Uncle Peter" Mitchell. 

What a terrific and all around outstanding persona did we all witness at Melrose in our community of Orange Mound.  He always seemed cool, calm, and collected in his thoughts .  This is the end of an elegant sports era for sure.  Coach Mitchell garnered respect and admiration wherever he went from all of us as an educator, as a concerned civic minded individual and of course a winning coach. May He envelope him in His mercy and grant his family patience and acceptance of His decree.


First met Coach Pete Mitchell in late 1974.    His reputation as a hard to beat football recruiter was spreading  thru out the  South.   My side of the ball was blessed with young men  that this easy talking, kind and inspiring leader had  signed to play.  “Our moment together was brief and temporary, but my memories  of you will last forever”.  May GOD continue to bless each member of your extended family❤️ RIP Coach Mitchell🙏

As a big sister, I have sweet memories of my baby brother. I called him baby boy, he was funny and delightful to be around. He was warm  and of course handsome. I will miss him so much  and love him with all my heart.

I met Mr.Mitchell when we lived next door on Thames.  He was at Melrose and l was  in the 7th grade.  I road with him to school every morning for 2 years 
 Then some days Sybil or him would get me to babysit  Eddie,  Sheri, Brian and then Rob.  
As the years went by  I applied to the FBI and accepted. to the Washington DC  office.  The agent interviewed  Mr. Mitchell  without my or my parents knowledge. He said the agent wanted to know what did we talked about.  Mr.Mitchell said he couldn't remember I was in Junior High.  
When ever  l would see him l often smile and greeted with a smile. Such a beautiful person and a  great personality.  May you rest in peace. 




Coach Pete was a Maryt when it came to the kids and their success. He loved the kids he cared about he went far and beyond to make sure they had everything they need .my heart is heavy  he will be truly he will live on in our hearts. Moo Moo grandmother Rosemariw wilson Rip 

Mr. Mitchell was very special to me.  I met him when I moved to Memphis in 1979.  When I became president of the Memphis Chapter of the Southern University Alumni Federation, Mr. Mitchell was always there to support with whatever was needed.  He always encouraged me to continue to work hard to get all of our Alums active.  Even if he did not attend a function, he would always support it financially.
Mr. Mitchell, I will miss you dearly! Rest in Heaven, you deserve it!

Eldridge “Pete” Mitchell was a ‘class act’ and an exceptional mentor and coach to a cadre of impressionable young men.  I was fortunate to be numbered among such God-favored young men.  Coach Mitchell was an intricate, unique entity in my maturation.

I thank God for allowing my life and the life of Coach Mitchell to intersect.  My sincere prayers and condolences to his lovely wife and family.

Is someone that I will always respect and love.  He supported Melrose even after his coaching term had ended.  In 1979, he agreed to be a part of the Vocational Education Program in which he would allow a student to work part-time.  This on the job training would permit a student in their Senior year to attend Melrose half the day and the other half report to work for him at his Insurance Company.  Unbeknownst to us both a great friendship would begin.  After graduation he offered that student a job, and the training I learned led to my preparations for the next step in life.   It led to my beginnings at FedEx where I have now been employed for 37 years and owe it all to him.


Coach Pete MItchell was a very supportive of my family he and My Dad Coach “Woody” Woodruff were great friends. He meant so much to our family and I am heartbroken that he will no longer be with us. To Aunt Syble and  the family you have our sincere condolences and prayers. There was none like him and I appreciate everything he did for my family. RIP Uncle Pete 🙏🏽🙏🏽❤️❤️ “ The Woodruff family “

Its one thing to look like a leader, and have the voice of leadership, Coach Mitchell had both.
I will always remember my excitement to play for Coach Mitchell at Melrose in 1971. I will never forget his voice to motivate. Blessings and GODs grace to family and friends in the days ahead.

Pete told me,”to never compromise my integrity and to learn as much as I can,” after a contentious day at school. Just by watching Pete throughout the years, I’ve learned that thoughtful leadership does not involve ego and you can’t put yourself first. Our family, as well as the city and county of Memphis, have lost a true leader.

He was my coach from 1960 to 63 at Melrose he was the main reason I received a scholarship and went on the college he was one of the greatest coaches I ever had he will be truly missed

Peter, I always admired you as a teacher and coach. You taught how to be the best quarterback I could be. We won over 90% of our games and I was named All-City quarterback in 1959. You were always a respected friend of the Lee Family and will be missed dearly. May you Rest In Peace with “Big Joe” and the rest of the Wildcat family. Our prayers are with Sybil and your loved ones.

Coach Mitchell was a great man. He was the man I admired most, next to my father. He was an excellent role model, dedicated to his family, his community, and to Melrose. His love of Melrose was absolute. May he rest in peace and may God bless his family.

My Uncle Peter always made me feel seen and heard 👂 on my Dad’s side of the family! I spent summer days with him as a teenager with him and Auntie Sybil when Dad (Donnie) was working. He was the first one to call me when the Don passed. I felt loved by my Uncle, my Grandmother’s Brother—who was also a BIG brother to my Dad ‘cause Lola was fast and 15. I love you Uncle Peter, rest well you good and faithful servant. I will TRULY miss you.
