Ernest graduated from Treadwell High School in 1955, where he was a talented athlete and proudly won the decathlon. Following graduation, he served his country in the United States Air Force from 1956 to 1960, stationed in Thule, Greenland, where he worked as a fireman.
After his military service, Ernest met the love of his life, Geraldine, at The Navy Club in Dubuque, Iowa. The two married and moved to Memphis in 1964, where they built a life centered on love, faith, and family. Geraldine preceded him in death, and together they are reunited in eternal peace.
Ernest joined the Memphis Fire Department in 1960 and served his community with courage and integrity until his retirement in 1998. He was a devoted member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church and an active participant in the Knights of Columbus.
Ernest had a zest for life and enjoyed dancing, fishing, and golfing. Above all, he was an amazing “Poppy”, whose warmth, humor, and love for his family will be cherished forever. He shared a special bond with his daughter Gabrielle Scarbough (Cary) and his granddaughter Lauren Stockdale (Josh), who brought him immense joy. He is also survived by several other grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his children, Mike Riesselman, Debbie Dixon, Julieann Connell (Shawn), Anthony Hulbert (Shelly), and Gabrielle Scarbrough (Cary).
He will be remembered for his kind heart, steady spirit, and the joy he brought to everyone who knew him.
A service honoring Ernest’s life will be held at West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery on November 4, at 2:00pm.
