

FRANK TAMBLE STEGBAUER, 88, died Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at Avow Hospice in Naples, Florida. Mr. Stegbauer was born in Memphis, Tennessee on September 19, 1924 to Mary Elizabeth Tamble Stegbauer and David Rose Stegbauer. Mr. Stegbauer graduated from Southside High School and Memphis Law School, now known as the University of Memphis School of Law. He was a decorated World War II Army Air Corps veteran. Following the war, he returned home to Memphis and was active locally and nationally in the maritime industry and industry associations. Mr. Stegbauer served on the Board of Directors and was a past Chairman of the Memphis Port Commission, a member and past President of the Memphis Propeller Club, and an active member and past Chairman of the Board of the American Waterways Operators. He was the first chairman of the Congressionally Chartered Coast Guard Towing Safety Advisory Committee. Mr. Stegbauer worked at Warner and Tamble, a family maritime business, from 1946 until becoming co-owner of Southern Towing Company, from 1960 until 1986 when he became the majority owner. He retired from Southern Towing Company in 2008 and became a resident of Naples, Florida. Mr. Stegbauer was a member of Grace St. Luke’s and Church of the Holy Communion Episcopal Church in Memphis. He is survived by his wife, Jo Anne Stegbauer of Naples, Florida; two sons, William D. Stegbauer, Sr. of Memphis and John Frank Stegbauer of Gulfport, Mississippi; two daughters, Elizabeth Stegbauer Collins of Woodbury, Minnesota and Laura S. Moore of Shreveport, Louisiana; eight grandchildren, Michael Rawls Moore, Jr., Dr. Frank Newland Moore, Laura Elizabeth Moore, P. Dennis Collins, Jr., Elizabeth Tamble Collins, William David Stegbauer, Jr., Scott Tamble Stegbauer, Jennifer Stegbauer Betts; and one great-grandchild, Ana Alexandra Dickey. Visitation and reception will be held Saturday, May 4 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Memphis Funeral Home, with a private graveside service for family at Forest Hill Cemetery Midtown.
