My father Fred Hodges passed away at the age of 84 to join his wife of 63 years, Charlotte Hodges.
Fred’s successes in life were the epitome of the American dream. He was born in Blytheville, Arkansas growing up in poverty. He worked any and every job he could—driving a truck, working at a gas station to working on an oil rig. Through the generosity of a few people who saw a spark in him and a sports scholarship from Memphis State—Fred got his degree, married Charlotte—the love of his life--and the two set out to build a life together.
Fred taught school during the day, worked at a bowling alley at night and a grocery store on the weekends. They eventually moved to California where Fred honed his sales skills selling cooking oil before finding his passion in financial services. After many years of selling stocks and bonds, he found his niche in financial consulting and he was one of the founders of Consulting Services Group in Memphis.
My father loved to entertain and travel. He and Charlotte had many adventures over their lifetime, and stayed active, playing tennis and golf for decades. Fred was an avid Tiger fan and often traveled with the U of M teams.
His generous nature came from his humble beginnings and spurred him to support Memphis in many ways, giving both his time serving on boards and putting together resources to numerous charities and foundations. Fred always took an interest in helping younger generations become successful—whether it was coaching teens in football, business mentorship or offering a hand to those who needed it.
Fred leaves his daughter Whitney, son-in law John Hayes, an extended family and a myriad of friends that span the country.
A celebration of Fred and Charlotte will be held in the future. We request that donations be made in Fred’s memory to St. Jude or Le Bonheur FedexFamilyHouse.
