

Gerald was a distinguished attorney and judge based in Memphis, Tennessee, with a career spanning over three decades. He dedicated his life to the practice of law, the pursuit of justice, and service to his community.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tennessee in 1987 and his J.D. from the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law in 1991. After law school, Gerald built a successful career as a criminal defense attorney, handling complex, high-profile cases and representing clients with dedication, skill, and an unwavering commitment to protecting their rights.
In 2014, Gerald was elected to serve as Judge of Division 9 of the Shelby County General Sessions Criminal Court, where he presided over a full criminal docket. During his tenure, he was actively involved in court initiatives, most notably establishing the Mental Health Court — a program providing alternatives and meaningful support for individuals facing mental health challenges.
From 2022 until his death, Gerald served as a Special Assistant for Post-Conviction Litigation in the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office, continuing his commitment to justice and public service.
Known for his sense of humor and keen intelligence, Gerald was respected by colleagues, clients, and community members alike.
Gerald especially cherished his children and grandchildren: his daughter Kaitlin Watts (Eric) of Memphis; and his sons Jack Skahan of San Francisco, California, and Ben Skahan of New York, New York. He also took great joy in his two grandchildren, Caroline and Rowe Watts.
Gerald is survived by his siblings: Kathleen (Rob) Schumann of Gray, Maine; Patrick (Melissa) Skahan of Cumberland, Maine; Paula (Wendy) Skahan of Memphis, Tennessee; Kevin Skahan of Chattanooga, Tennessee; and Tom (Kim) Skahan of Stuart, Florida.
A memorial service will be held at a future date.
