Helen Becker Dahlberg was born July 24, 1925, in Memphis, TN to Robert C. Becker and Marie Barbaro Becker. She grew up in Sacred Heart Parish and attended Sacred Heart School for twelve years. She was a parishioner of St. Anne’s on Highland for over 50 years. Most recently she was a parishioner of the Church of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church.
After graduation, Helen worked at Royal Typewriter and McGregor’s Appliance Company before marrying Herman J. Dahlberg at Sacred Heart Church in 1948. They were married 52 years before his death in June 2001, and she proudly wears her wedding ring to this day.
Helen was an extraordinary sister, a devoted wife, a wonderful mother and an excellent grandmother, an amazing friend, and the kindest soul. She was a voracious reader and could finish a crossword puzzle in record time. A creature of habit, she rarely skipped her daily walks, and even more rarely did she miss an episode of Jeopardy. Her many friends knew never to ring her at 3:30, as she would be busy calling out answers before the contestants could even buzz.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Sister Mary Robert Becker, SCN; her husband, Herman; and her sister-in-law, Ellen Dahlberg Terrell, whom she visited for many years at St. Francis nursing home. She leaves behind her daughters, Donna Dahlberg of Memphis, and Denise Dahlberg Carpenter and her husband Don Carpenter of Germantown; her grandsons, Alex Craig Carpenter, Christopher A. Carpenter (Brigid), and Michael J. Carpenter (Jacqueline); two great-grandchildren, Ben and Lily, who now have a guardian angel watching over them with well-worn rosary beads; and her sister, Martha Jane Tosh, along with several nieces and nephews. Her family thanks the staff and friends at Germantown Plantation, her recent new home, as well as the caring and professional staff at Methodist Germantown (3rd floor East and West).
Her family will accept visitors on Wednesday, February 3, from 5:00-7:00 p.m., with rosary at 7:00 p.m.; services will be Thursday, February 4 at 10:00 a.m., both at Memphis Funeral Home - Poplar Chapel. Burial will follow in Memphis Memory Gardens Cemetery on Raleigh LaGrange Road, Memphis, TN.
