Helen Ruth (Armour) McCommon, age 91, of Memphis, Tennessee, passed away on Monday, August 15, 2022. Helen was born May 29, 1931 to Otis Jones Armour and Mayola Murley Armour. She was raised in Silerton, Tennessee and attended Bolivar High School. As part of a farming family, she was proud of the accomplishment of picking more cotton than any of the other adults during one harvest. She also helped out at her church in Silerton, assisting in collecting the offertory and producing the church bulletins.
Helen was a dedicated member of Leawood Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Robert Hayes McCommon and siblings, Harold Armour, Mayotis Jones, and Autrey Parker. She is survived by her children, Michael H. McCommon, Larry A. McCommon (Phyllis), and Joy Joyner (Rodger); grandchildren, Michael Christian McCommon, Matthew McCommon (Shelia), Stuart McCommon, Candice Joyner, and Chelsea Joyner; and great-grandchildren, Luke and Logan McCommon. In addition to her family, Helen is survived by the countless children that she watched and helped raise in her home over numerous years. She was a very giving and caring person.
The family will receive friends at a visitation on Friday, August 19 from 1:00 PM until the funeral service at 2:00 PM, at Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN 38119. Interment will be in Memphis Memory Gardens.
