Born on December 20, 1947 in Marks, MS, he was preceded in death by his father, John William McKee, Sr., his mother, Mary Alma James McKee, brothers James William McKee, Leroy McKee, and Dennis Murfree McKee, and sister Margaret McKee Worley.
His wife of 46 years, Millicent Ruby Ann Mason McKee, and his three daughters Ashley Jones (Paul) of Eads, TN, Kristina McKee of Covington, TN, and Lauren Kumar (Gyan) of San Francisco, CA will forever miss his sense of humor, his willingness to always be there for you, and his generous nature.
He is also survived by six beloved grandchildren, Grace Regan, Graydon Jones, Maya Kumar, Asher Kumar, Archer Kumar, and Cordelia Jones. He leaves behind a large extended family including brother John McKee, Jr. (Brenda), and three sisters, Madge McKee Wooten (Ray), Jimmie McKee Perry (Ed), and Nancy McKee (Fred D’Antonio), and many nieces and nephews.
After retiring, David enjoyed spending time with his family, teaching them all about tending to the garden, raising corn, tomatoes, and squash. He’d go on grand adventures with his grandson Graydon, stopping by every gun store in town, and talking for hours about the importance of having a Browning rifle, a Stihl chainsaw, and a good knife.
David had so many stories to tell, but you’d know that if he started to smile, and that smile turned into a belly laugh, he was really enjoying telling that tale.
You could often find him riding around on his tractor, enjoying the day by making that yard “look a bit better”.
Recently with the addition of his granddaughter Cordelia, David would spend hours just holding her in his arms, neither one of them wanting the other one to go.
In lieu of flowers, please plant a tree in his memory.
A graveside service for herbert david mckee for Herbert will be held Friday, November 8, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Memphis Memory Gardens, 6444 Raleigh Lagrange Rd, Memphis, TN 38134.
