

Howell Ross Witherspoon, 91, passed away January 19, 2014. He was a native Memphian, a member of Raleigh United Methodist Church, a 32nd Degree Mason and a Shriner. He was a member of the Memphis Belle Association and a volunteer driver for the Shriner's Hospital Van, which transports children to the hospitals for their appointments. Mr. Witherspoon was a retired Master Sergeant with the U. S. Air Force, serving in WWII, the Korean War and in Vietnam. During WWII, he was a B17 tail gunner and was shot down over Germany becoming a POW. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mayford M. Witherspoon and is survived by his daughter, Linda Williams and son-in-law, Mike Williams of Bartlett, three grand-children, six great-grand-children and one great-great-granddaughter. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, January 23, at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, Poplar Avenue.
