James Clifton Evans aka (Uncle “Bitty” or “Tall”) was born on Monday, January 7, 1946, in Memphis, TN to Ethel Evans.
He attended Booker T. Washington High before enlisting in the United States Army, on Monday, September 21, 1964 in Memphis, TN serving his country for 21 years and retiring an E-7 in December 1985 in Anchorage, AK. After his retirement from the Army, James then retired from two other major companies, Sam’s Club in Anchorage, AK, as the General Manager and from TJMX Company in Memphis, TN as the General Manager with AJ Wright.
James was united in Holy Matrimony on Monday, December 31, 1990 to Cheron L. Evans of Los Angeles, CA. They were married for 28 years. He loved being with his family more than anything. James loved to play golf and go fishing. But after the loss of his sight in 2007, he enjoyed listening to music with MSNBC, Dr. Phil and all types of movies.
Preceding him in death was his grandmother, Pearl Hoard; uncle, Robert Evans; mother, Ethel Evans; brother, Robert (Babe Brother) Evans; two sisters-in-law, Caroline Marie Burks and Mary Carmelita Burks-Grooms; brother-in-law, Oscar Grooms and his father-in-law, Sammie Lee Burks, Sr.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Cheron L. Evans; their 3 children Bianca L. Mabry-Evans (31), James Clifton Evans, II (27) and Jamie Christian Evans (24), all born in Anchorage, AK, now residing in Memphis, along with India S. Kendrick and her mother Cassandra Kendrick of Memphis, TN; his mother-in-law, Mary E. Terronez; two brothers, Marvin Evans of Memphis, TN and Samuel O. Evans (Beverly H. Evans) of Austin, TX; sister-in-law, Jessie (Kris) Johnson (Ozell), Hemet, CA; sister-in-law, Cynthia Burks of Rock Hill, SC, and brother-in-law, Sammie Lee Burks, Jr. (Marie) Hesperia, CA; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, friends, former co-workers and brothers in arms.
The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, April 25, 2019, from 5-7 P.M. at Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Avenue, Memphis. Funeral services for Mr. Evans will be held Friday, April 26, 2019 in the chapel of Memphis Funeral Home. Interment will be held at 2 P.M. at West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery.
