Born on December 31, 1931, in Savannah, GA; died September 19, 2021, in Memphis, TN. He was a graduate of Savannah High School and Armstrong Junior College in Savannah, GA. Also, a graduate of the University of Georgia, where he was Chapter President of Sigma Pi Fraternity. A Naval Aviator during the Korean Conflict, he returned to Armstrong where he met his future wife, Jayne. He worked in management at Sears, where he retired after 35 years. He then worked part time at other retail stores for many years.
Jim was a Christian, a Deacon at Ridgeway Baptist Church, who led the Family and Homebound Ministries. He and his wife travelled much of the world, often staying in Youth Hostel International sites, or B&B’s. They volunteered at the Orpheum, Theatre Memphis, and Germantown Performing Arts Center. At GPAC, they were ushers of the year for the 2010-2011 season.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Lucille Fields, and by his daughter, Fraya Fields. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jayne, his son, Jim, Jr. (Patty), and their three sons: Christopher; Nicholas; and Jonathan.
A gathering for family and friends will be Thursday, September 23, 2:00pm – 4:00 pm, at Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN 38119. Please wear a mask. Graveside services will be in Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, GA Saturday, September 25, 2021, at 2:00 pm.
