

James Charles Herbert, a lifelong Memphian, died on Sunday, June 14, 2015. He was 84. A graduate of Treadwell High School, attendee of Mississippi State University and Graduate of Memphis State University, Mr. Herbert was a retired Deputy Director for the Memphis Police Department and a 50 year member of Mullins United Methodist Church. He was a 50 year Mason and member of the Unity Lodge #95 and a Shriner. Most important to him was being very actively involved in the Memphis area youth sports activities. He was a member of M.I.C.U.A. and Mid-South Football for over 50 years; original member of the S.E.C. association when farmed, member of high school Memphis and Shelby County Baseball; assignor for high school, collage & Gameday officials; worked to assign umpires for the U.S.A. Team at Millington; and taught clinics for young umpires. His honors include being inducted to the T.S.S.A.A. Hall of Fame for baseball; TN Coaches Hall of Fame and Memphis Parks Commission Hall of Fame; was the Bridges Man of the Year in 2008-2009 for TSSAA; worked the state playoff games in football and the S.E.C. final game in baseball in the early 1970s. The family invites you to a gathering of family and friends on Wednesday, June 17 from five o’clock until eight o’clock in the evening and funeral services will be on Thursday June 18 beginning at ten o’clock in the morning all at Memphis Funeral Home located at 5599 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN 38119. Mr. Herbert was preceded in death by a son, Michael R. Herbert. He is survived by his wife of 60 years Frances Riley Herbert; daughter Melissa “Missy” Buckley (Kevin); five grandchildren Michael K. Herbert, Sarah Herbert, Catherine Buckley, Claire Buckley & Connor Buckley. Contributions in lieu of customary remembrances may be given to Mullins U.M.C. or the charity of your choice in his honor.
